Glowworm’s Dance
After a long exhausting day in his home office Greybeard decides to take a short walk. Though the sun has already set the dawn in summer lasts very long as usual in higher latitudes, so it is still bright in the streets. But as soon as he enters the forest it’s getting darker. As long as he walks along the wider path he feels comfortable, but when he takes one of his favorite narrow forest tracks he needs to take care where he puts his feet.
He walks a few steps in the shadows, where he can barely discern the shapes of the bushes and trees around him when he suddenly spots them. First only one, after his eyes have accommodated to the dark he notices many more of them: the dancing little elves carrying the remaining daylight with their bodies into the early night.
Hundreds of fireflies in short distance above the ground are whipping and and flickering between the black shrubs in the underwood. They perform a mysterious round dance following a complicated choreography, their tiny little lights waft around his knees. Wherever he looks, he spots them all around, now they are thousands, glinting everywhere.
He slowly sinks down on his knees, admiring the nightly spectacle. His eyes are not able to follow a single one of these blinking creatures, he can only try to perceive the performance with his senses.
Slowly he lifts up again, paces leisurely ahead, still accompanied by the enchanting dance of the tiny wights all along his path.
